Practice Exercise 3, q 5

Q: Agh! In Question 5, I keep getting 4, DingMao. Here’s how I reached this ‘different’ answer. What am I doing wrong?

25 Jan 1996 10:46

96 X 5 = 480
+ 96/4 (24) = 504
+9 =513
+ day 25 = 538
+ big months 6 = 544
+ odd month 0 = 544
Divide by 60 = 540, remainder 4

A: Thank you for asking! The Day Pillar calculation can be a bit tricky…

In this particular example you need to remember to use one of the year exceptions.

The trick is using ’95 instead of ’96 because the person was born before March. The reminder is 58, which is XinYou.

I hope this helps!
